Position Title: Behavior Assistant
Reports To: Principal
Position Summary
The Behavior Assistant supports a positive school climate by assisting in the implementation of behavior interventions and supports for students. This role works closely with teachers, administrators, and support staff to promote appropriate student behavior, increase time on task, and ensure a safe and supportive learning environment for all students.
Key Responsibilities
Student Support
? Provide direct support to students demonstrating behavioral challenges
? Assist in implementing Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) and Tier 2/Tier 3 supports
? Support students in developing self-regulation, coping, and social skills
? Supervise and assist students during transitions, recess, lunch, and other non-instructional times
? De-escalate student behaviors using approved strategies and techniques
? Maintain student dignity and confidentiality at all times
Instructional Support
? Assist teachers in maintaining a positive and structured classroom environment
? Reinforce expectations, routines, and procedures
? Support student engagement and on-task behavior during instruction
? Help facilitate small group or individual behavior supports as directed
Data Collection & Monitoring
? Collect and document behavioral data (frequency, duration, triggers, interventions)
? Monitor student progress toward behavioral goals
? Assist in tracking patterns and identifying areas of need
? Communicate data and observations to teachers and administration
Collaboration & Communication
? Work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, counselors, and intervention teams
? Participate in team meetings (MTSS, behavior, or student support meetings)
? Communicate effectively with staff regarding student progress and needs
? Support consistent implementation of school-wide expectations and PBIS systems
Safety & Compliance
? Follow all district and school policies regarding student behavior and safety
? Implement crisis prevention and intervention strategies as trained
? Assist in maintaining a safe environment for all students and staff
? Report incidents and concerns promptly
Qualifications
? High school diploma or equivalent (Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred)
? Experience working with children, preferably in a school setting
? Knowledge of behavior management strategies and PBIS (preferred)
? Ability to remain calm and professional in challenging situations
? Strong interpersonal and communication skills
? Ability to maintain confidentiality
Physical Requirements
? Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the school day
? Ability to assist with student supervision and, if necessary, physical support in crises (as trained)
Preferred Skills
? Experience supporting students with behavioral or emotional needs
? Training in de-escalation or crisis intervention (e.g., CPI, MANDT, or similar)
? Familiarity with data tracking systems
? Strong problem-solving and relationship-building skills
Work Environment
? School setting (classrooms, hallways, cafeteria, playground)
? Fast-paced environment requiring flexibility and responsiveness
